Time.news – Sudden slowdown for the industry-locomotive of the sparkling wine industry in the world. After the still wine, also the Italian Prosecco has a turnaround. This is certified by the Observatory of the Unione Italiana Vini (UIV) according to which in the period January-April 2023 the minus sign in front of the amounts for the volumes of bubbles appears as a constant: -20% in the United Kingdom, -6.8 % for the United States, -2.4% in Germany.

“Basically it is Prosecco that is losing ground almost everywhere, even beyond the average of sparkling wines”, explains Gambero Rosso: that is, -20.2% in the United Kingdom, -12.1% in Belgium, -9 % in Switzerland, -8.6% in Germany, -4.5% in the United States, while only “France (+12.7%) and Russia (+47.9%) remain to raise sales”. In the latter case, however, the growth is due to a period of import stalemate linked to the Ukrainian conflict, “therefore, the exploit must be taken with a grain of salt”, comments the monthly gourmet.

On balance, overall in the first quarter of 2023 the sales of Prosecco in the world “went down in volume by 5.9%, returning to the line of 100 million liters, compared to a -3% for the entire sector bubbles”. Asti is doing well and, going against the trend, manages to score +18.7%.

The other positive sign is due to varietal sparkling wines (+11.5%). It should also be noted that among the shelves of large-scale retail trade, super and hypermarkets, things do not seem to be getting better: as the analysis of the Uiv-Ismea Observatory on a Nielsen IQ basis reveals, the sparkling type “has gone from a robust +4 % by volume in the first quarter at -0.8% in the semester, kept afloat by the growth of low cost Charmats”. In particular, Prosecco totaled a -5.8% in terms of volumes, above all due to the abrupt stop of the Docg (at -21%). And the race to the bottom concerns almost all sparkling denominations, always with the exception of “Asti Spumante (+5.9%), together with low-cost Charmats (+8.6%) which set the price at 4, 6 euros/litre, almost 40% less than Prosecco”.

Is it a physiological decline that also sounds like a first alarm signal? According to Carlo Flamini, head of the Uiv Observatory, “it is still too early to say” however “in some countries such as the States it could be the consequence of an overstocking in 2022, so the figure will probably stabilize in the rest of the year”.

Certainly, however, continues Flamini, “there is a trend that cannot be ignored and which concerns almost all markets: the consumer, forced by the increase in the cost of living, has become much more attentive to his wallet, thus discovering that he can drink less expensive bubbles; even more so if we are talking about home consumption linked to mixology”. In this case read: Spritz.

“Not by chance”, concludes Flamini, “the only sparkling wines to grow in this first part are dry Charmats, perhaps always produced from glera grapes: a sort of substitute for Prosecco”.
