The United States urged its citizens on Thursday to “make plans to leave Haiti as soon as possible” through commercial media, due to the violence that is taking place and after restricting the movements of its personnel to the embassy due to intense shooting in the enclosure environment.

In a statement published on the website of the US Embassy in Haiti, it is reported that the State Department makes this appeal in light of “the recent armed confrontations between the gangs and the Police” and the “elevated threat of violent crime and kidnapping” in Port-au-Princea situation that lately has particularly affected the neighborhoods of Vivy Michel, Tabarre, Torcel, Tapage and Trutier.

“The Government of the United States sees its ability to provide emergency services extremely limited” to its citizens in Haiti, the note indicates.

The State Department places at level 4, the highest and which corresponds to “Do not travel”, the notices related to Haiti, due to the riots and crimes such as kidnappings, of which US citizens have already been victims and in those who have suffered various damages.

This Wednesday, the diplomatic headquarters issued a statement announcing that, “due to the intense shooting in the vicinity of the embassy compoundall mission personnel are restricted to the “legation compound” until further notice.

Violence is extreme in Haiti, where armed gangs have become strong and control much of Port-au-Prince and its surroundings, sowing terror among residents who, in many cases, choose to leave their homes and become internally displaced.

The massacres, the rapes, kidnappings and burning houses have become commonplace in this countrythe poorest in America.

In Haiti, plunged into a crisis at all levels, close to 50% of the population suffers from food insecurity and half of its just over 11 million inhabitants live in poverty.
