The climber from the Cofidis team is taking part in her second Tour de France this year. Every evening, after her stage, “Libé” backpedals with her. Today, stage 5 between Onet-le-Château and Albi.

For the second consecutive summer, Morgane Coston is taking part in the Grande Boucle. A biology teacher, the 32-year-old runner put her job aside two years ago to devote herself fully to cycling. Every evening for a week, the climber from the Cofidis team tells Libé about her Tour stage. This Thursday, July 27, at the end of a grueling fifth stage between Onet-le-Château and Albi, she finished in the gruppetto, more than 17 minutes behind the German Ricarda Bauernfeind.

“Tonight I’m really very tired, I don’t really have any energy left, I feel like I’m at my wit’s end. The race was very fast. It drove particularly fast during the first two hours, at an average of 42 km/h. I wanted to get into the breakaway but I couldn’t. Unlike Clara Koppenburg, our leader, who managed to slip in.

“As it was going fast, it was winding, I quickly backed up, from the first descents. And I never managed to come back. I found myself in the gruppetto [dernier groupe de coureurs avant la voiture balai, ndlr]. When we are there, everyone is sympathetic to each other’s fate. There isn’t really a team anymore, but a group of cyclists who help each other to finish within the given time.

“Unlike me, Clara had a great stage. She finished 11th, managed to follow the best, so for the team it’s really positive. Now for me it’s the usual routine to recover: massage, a meal, then rest. Sleep is very important.”
