While the situation around the presidency of the Republic of Niger has been still confused since the beginning of the morning, the ECOWAS Commission has just published a press release in which it condemns a “coup attempt”.
“It is with astonishment and dismay that ECOWAS learned of the coup attempt in Niger”, introduced the press release.
“It condemns in the strongest possible terms this attempt to seize power by force and calls on the perpetrators of this act to immediately and unconditionally release the democratically elected President of the Republic”, the statement continues.

Earlier in the day, in a social media post, Niger’s presidency said that “elements of the presidential guard (GP) [avaient] engaged in anti-Republican sentiment and unsuccessfully attempted to enlist the support of the National Armed Forces and the National Guard.”
The message also specified that Mohamed Bazoum and his family “are doing well”.
