Kiev, Jul 28 (EFE) towards the occupied port of Berdyansk, Ukrainian military expert Sergey Grabski said today.
“It is too early to celebrate it as a great success of the Ukrainian army, but it clearly shows that the Ukrainian forces manage to advance in very tough conditions,” this Ukrainian reserve colonel told EFE.
The recapture of Staromaiorske, Grabski explains, allows Ukraine to improve its tactical position in this front area, and will help the Kiev forces “to expand their offensive actions to first approach and then destroy the second Russian defensive line.”
Asked about the dense minefields that are complicating the Ukrainian counteroffensive, this reserve soldier with experience in international missions in Iraq and the Balkans anticipates that they will not pose the same problem when attacking the second line.
“We cannot say that we will find the same level of density,” says Grabski, who explains that filling this second line with explosives would also create serious obstacles for Russian troops when maneuvering to respond to attacks from Ukraine.
The reserve colonel considers that Ukraine has not yet created the conditions to launch a larger-scale mechanized offensive, as the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and other sources that follow the conflict assure that it could have already occurred in the western front of the southern Zaporizhia region.
Grabski believes that Ukraine should continue to wear down Russian troops with the current tactic of launching small groups of lightly armed soldiers into the attack while destroying as many artillery units and other Russian targets as possible to weaken the occupying forces before putting more troops and equipment in the fray.
Ukraine began its land counteroffensive at the beginning of June. Ukrainian forces are currently attacking on three segments of the front: Bakhmut in the east; the Staromaiorske area in the southeast and Zaporizhia in the south. EFE
