BerlinRussia wants to apply to host the Olympic Games in 2036 – and thus possibly compete with Berlin. The Russian Olympic Committee (OKR) and the Ministry of Sports have been tasked with finding a city to host the major event, said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko in Moscow on Tuesday. Russia last hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. In 1980 there were Summer Olympics in Moscow. Berlin is also being discussed as a possible venue for the Summer Games in 2036.

“As far as I know, the International Olympic Committee has not yet announced a competition for the Games, so we are waiting,” said Chernyshenko. “We absolutely have to apply for 2036, the whole country has to choose a worthy candidate.” That is why the Ministry of Sports and the OKR should now start with the selection of a city.

Russia’s athletes can currently only take part in the Olympic Games under a neutral flag due to sanctions imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada). In December 2020, the International Court of Justice for Sports had excluded Russia from participating in the Olympic Games for two years, for example, because of the manipulation of doping data from the Moscow laboratory.

Most recently, the new President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, Thomas Weikert, emphasized his interest in an Olympic application. “We will have to deal with the 1936 Olympics under National Socialism anyway. With the Olympic Games in Germany 100 years later, we can show that and how Germany has transformed into a cosmopolitan state, ”said Weikert.
