AAP Leader Anbumani Arrested as Protests Turn Violent in Neyveli

Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu – The town of Neyveli in Cuddalore District turned into a riot zone yesterday as protests against the expansion of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) took a violent turn. AAP leader Anbumani was arrested during the protests, which saw stone pelting and road blockades, and resulted in the police using force to bring the situation under control.

The NLC, also known as Neyveli Coal Company, has recently acquired agricultural lands in several villages of Cuddalore District for expansion purposes. The construction of a canal in the area to allow water flow from the mine to Paravnar has been a point of contention for the local farmers.

In support of the farmers, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) joined the protests, which were led by AAP leader Anbumani. Anbumani expressed his opposition to the expansion plans during the protest, stating that the farmers would not give up their land, even if compensated monetarily.

The protests escalated into clashes between the police and BJP members, resulting in the injury of 19 policemen and damage to police vehicles. To control the situation, the police used water cannons and batons, eventually resorting to firing “dummy” bombs to disperse the crowd.

The violence led to the closure of government buses in the Neyveli area, causing inconvenience to the local residents. More than 50 people involved in stone pelting have been taken into custody for interrogation.

The clashes also affected the local businesses, with 26 Tasmac shops in the Neyveli area and other shops in the riot-affected areas being closed. Traffic disruptions were observed on the Chennai-Kumbakonam National Highway, and alternate routes were designated for vehicles passing through Indira Nagar.

The Madras High Court has taken note of the situation and has ordered both the central and state governments to respond to a petition seeking a ban on the protests and protection for the NLC. The court has adjourned the hearing to August 3.

Minister Thangam Tennarasu has condemned the violence and urged for a peaceful resolution to the issue. He highlighted that the government has provided compensation to the landowners and assured that farmers cultivating in alternative routes will receive financial support from NLC.

The government has emphasized that violence and disruptions will not be tolerated and that strict action will be taken against those who disturb public peace. They have called for dialogue to solve the issue instead of resorting to violent actions.

The police have arrested Anbumani and other protesters, and investigations are ongoing to ensure the safety and security of the area.
