This Thursday, Laurent Foirest, 49, former coach of Quimper (relegated to N1B), was inducted as coach of the Metropolitans 92, the former team of Victor Wembanyama.

After eight seasons in Quimper, Foirest leaves the Rams of Kemper when they are relegated to N1B.

The new Mets coach will remain the assistant coach of the French men’s team, alongside Vincent Collet, whom he has accompanied since 2014 – and whom he therefore replaces on the Mets bench. In Quimper, Foirest notably managed to raise the team to Pro B, at the end of the 2016-2017 season.

He could even have reached the elite during the 2020-2021 season, but the previous season, stopped by the Covid-19 pandemic on the 23rd day when the Quimpérois were second in Pro B, had been declared white.

Foirest wore the France team jersey 150 times between 1995 and 2006 and was part of the Olympic vice-champion team at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. In France, he was French champion three times with the three clubs for which he wore the jersey: Antibes, Pau-Orthez and ASVEL, where he ended his career and then served as head of basketball operations.

The native of Antibes will finally lead a team in the first division on the bench of the Mets 92, vice-champions of France last season under the impetus of Victor Wembanyama drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in first position this summer.

Foirest leaves the Quimper club on relegation to National 1. He has reached an agreement with the Breton leaders to be released from the last year of his contract.

However, the new coach is parachuted in charge of a team orphaned by Victor Wembanyama, and came close enough to go out of business in the off-season. Foirest’s mission will be to completely rebuild a new team, with a greatly reduced budget, what’s more.
