RWDM never sleeps. The season has not yet started or it has already stormed hard at the Brussels PhD candidate. With owner John Textor (57) as a whirlwind. “In Belgium you constantly get ‘What do you know about Belgian football?’ hear”, it sounds in ‘The Athletic’.

January 18, 2023: technical director Julien Gorius is fired.

May 13, 2023: RWDM is promoted to 1A.

June 1, 2023: Thierry Dailly has been dismissed as chairman of RWDM. Gauthier Ganaye (ex-KVO) will be the new CEO.

July 24, 2023: coach Vincent Euvrard and his staff are evicted. The Brazilian Claudio Caçapa succeeds him.

In more than half a year, John Textor, the American owner of RWDM, has firmly established himself at his Brussels club. Textor is at the head of a multi-club project – which also includes Botafogo and Olympique Lyon – and aims for “a global collaboration”. Those who do not want to participate in his story, he pushes aside without batting an eyelid. At ‘The Athletic’ he explained more about his adventures at RWDM.

“We bought 80% of the shares from an individual (Thierry Dailly, ed.)”, he says. “And we signed a management agreement. It gives me control over football-related decisions. But once he received the check, reality hit hard. See, for such people, a club is their identity. They enjoy walking around in Brussels and being called ‘mister president’ everywhere. But we focus strongly on the cooperation between our clubs. While in Belgium you constantly ask ‘What do you know about Belgian football?’ gets to hear. That was the problem with the previous club leaders and with our sporting staff, whom we recently fired. Vincent Euvrard is a very capable trainer, he deserves to coach at the highest level. But we had better options in a context of global cooperation.”

Textor also alluded to “financial difficulties” in Belgian football. “We fired the general manager (Thierry Dailly, ed.) after money was lost from the club fund. I have only been the manager of the accounts for a few weeks.”

Dailly has always denied Textor’s allegations – the truth is guesswork. One thing is clear: RWDM has a turbulent start to the new season, which starts for them on Saturday with a home match against Racing Genk.
