She almost fell into the trap. On Wednesday, Sarah (the first name has been changed) receives an email from “SNCF Connect”, with the subject “your subscription at 0.99 euros valid for 1 year”. The mother, already a beneficiary of an Avantage card, thinks that the company is offering to extend her subscription at an unbeatable price.

Everything in the email, from the address used by the sender to the layout and color of the characters, perfectly imitates the typographical rules of the SNCF. The only clue that could suggest that the windfall smacks of a scam is an extra space between the end of a sentence and the full stop. In short, nothing to arouse suspicion and yet in one click you will be directed to a fraudulent payment site.

Nevertheless, “SNCF has never launched such a promotion”, wishes to specify the company. The price of the Avantage card remains fixed at 49 euros per year. The strategy of this campaign is partly to play on the memory of customers, who may remember a competition launched by the SNCF last June. 10,000 youth cards at 1 euro were then at stake, only for travelers under 28 years old. But this promotional operation is well and truly over.

Regular scam campaigns

The purpose of this phishing campaign is to extort bank details from targeted individuals. This well-known SNCF scam has been circulating for “several weeks”. The company is very often the target of these scams on the Internet. “We have noticed that several advertisements of this type are circulating. Phishing attempts are made by email but also on social networks. Links circulate in particular on Facebook, and offer the same offer.

It is therefore not only SNCF customers who are targeted by this scam. The railway company claims that this scam does not intervene after a data leak and assures that its “legal services are on the spot”. Society poses as a victim of these too-good-to-be-true promotions. A complaint was also filed, without specifying the reasons.

For the moment, no network at the origin of this fraudulent campaign has been identified. As for false ads, they continue to appear regularly on social networks and arrive in mailboxes. Take care!
