Before the capture of Nicolás Petro, who will have to answer for the crimes of money laundering and illicit enrichment, the reactions of important political figures in the country did not wait after the capture of the son of the president of Colombia.

Roy Barreras, former president of Congress and a member of the Historical Pact, expressed himself in an understanding way regarding the situation that President Petro is going through. “Any Colombian father and mother can understand his pain,” Barreras said on Twitter.

Iván Cepeda, senator and member of the Historical Pact, assured that Petro requested that his son be investigated, thus showing his support for the president. “As the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, had requested at the time, the Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation against his son and during the investigation an arrest is made.”

“I think that this shows that there is a desire to fully clarify the fact. The president has been the one who has filed the complaint on the matter so that justice can act freely and independently,” Cepeda added about the capture of Nicolás Petro.

Former senator and current candidate for mayor of Bogotá Gustavo Bolívar also showed his support for President Gustavo Petro, indicating that although he is the first son of a president to face Colombian justice, Bolívar defended the president. “No other president allows justice to act independently and without pressure as Petro does,” added the former senator.

Other of his supporters have come out to support the president’s reaction. “The greatness of his statement confirms our vision that he is a democrat and defender of the rule of law, even in the toughest tests that any person can undergo,” said the former Secretary General of the Presidency, Alfonso Prada.

Ángela Robledo, a former member of the House of Representatives and vice-presidential formula for Colombia Humana in the 2018 Colombian presidential elections, said that she would expect a “performance with guarantees” from the Prosecutor’s Office and expressed “admiration and solidarity” for President Gustavo Petro.

Senator Jota Pe Hernández also referred to the fact forcefully through Twitter. “Let the captures continue with those who are missing,” the senator emphasized.

“I feel that this capture restores some hope to Colombia, a country awash in corruption. Now we hope that when this alleged criminal is sentenced, he will not be named peace manager by his father. Colombia needs large prisons where all the bandits can fit in!” Hernández asserted, showing support for Colombian justice.

Other politicians, such as the senator from the Democratic Center Miguel Uribe, stood firm against the capture.

“With this capture, Petro’s deception is evidenced and the pact where they sold impunity for political and economic support is confirmed. Petro must take responsibility for him. Remember that Nicolás received money from mobsters that went to finance the presidential campaign,” said Uribe.
