Norrköping, Sweden – Late on Saturday evening, authorities were alerted to the escape of five men from Skenä’s Institution. The individuals, all between the ages of 25 and 40, had strayed from the facility during a gathering where a breathalyzer test was scheduled to ensure sobriety.
Robert Gustafsson, the police duty officer, revealed that a thorough search was conducted overnight, involving K-9 units and an extensive area sweep. However, the fugitives were not located and have since been declared as wanted by the police.
Gustafsson stated, “-It is assumed that they had consumed alcohol – and that is not allowed – as they escaped prior to the breath test.”
According to reports, the escapees managed to exit the institution through a fire door. Skenä’s Institution is classified as a level 3 facility, known for its lower security measures and absence of direct escape obstacles such as fences.
Monica Bergström, the press secretary for the Probation Service, confirmed that one of the escapees had been apprehended by staff on Sunday morning. However, the search continues for the remaining four individuals, with the police taking the lead in the ongoing investigation.
Bergström clarified that class 3 institutions typically house individuals who have received shorter prison sentences or have already served a significant portion of their sentence. The placement is determined based on assessments made regarding each inmate’s progress and level of risk.
Despite the escape, Bergström assured the public that there is no immediate danger posed by the fugitives. She stated, “-No, not based on what I know.”
Gustafsson explained that if the escaped men are encountered by the police during routine traffic checks or in public spaces, they will be promptly returned to the institution. However, the police are not actively pursuing the escapees, relying on their system alerts if a hit is registered.
Anstalten Skenäs, with a capacity for 164 individuals, is situated in Vikbolandet, approximately three miles outside Norrköping. The facility’s primary focus is rehabilitation and reintegration for inmates nearing the end of their sentences.
The search for the remaining four escapees is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the police immediately.
