At least 39 people were killed in the explosion of a bomb on Sunday July 30 in northwestern Pakistan during a rally of a radical Islamic party. A balance sheet that could worsen, with several dozen other people injured.

“A senior party official was due to speak at the ceremony, but before he arrived a bomb exploded, killing sixteen people and injuring fifty-two others”told Agence France-Presse (AFP), Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, inspector general of the police of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, located on the border with Afghanistan. “I can confirm that in the hospital we have 39 dead and 123 injured, including 17 patients in serious condition”Riaz Anwar, representative of the health ministry for the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, told AFP.

The explosion targeted the conservative religious party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islami-Fazal (JUI-F), which was organizing a rally in the town of Khar ahead of elections to be held later this year, the same source said.
