DECRYPTION – This discovery opens up avenues in the treatment of human cognitive disorders, for example in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Since it was discovered in 1997, the Klotho protein – which takes its name from a Greek goddess responsible for weaving the thread of life – has interested scientists for its role in aging. The potential of this molecule naturally produced by the body, but whose concentration declines with age, is revealed study after study.

In 2021, a publication by Nature thus revealed an association between certain genetic profiles of patients producing more Klotho and better episodic memory performance. A few years earlier, it had been shown that mice genetically modified to produce more Klotho had higher intellectual faculties. Better still, the researchers established that the administration of the protein could lengthen the life of small rodents and increase their cerebral plasticity (ie the ability of neurons to make new networks).
