Mercedes is struggling in Formula 1 with the return of an old problem. Superstar Lewis Hamilton is responsible for jumping the silver arrow.

Spa-Francorchamps.

The unintentionally bouncing Mercedes spoils the anticipation of team boss Toto Wolff on his vacation from Formula 1. “Now there are three weeks of vacation, but we also think about the car from morning to night,” said the Austrian after the Grand Prix from Belgium.

At the race in Spa-Francorchamps, the Silver Arrows of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell once again showed the problem of so-called bouncing that they thought had been overcome. “Both drivers say that the car jumps so much when braking that the tires overheat,” explained Wolff.

As a result of the aerodynamics revolution, the Mercedes kept bouncing at high speeds on long straights last season. That took a lot of time. The further development of the car should actually solve the problem. “Now we have to put our heads together to understand how that happened. The drivers said it was the biggest limiting factor,” Wolff said on Sky.

Record world champion Hamilton was a bit at a loss right after the Grand Prix in Belgium. “We’re actually back where we were last year,” said the Brit. He and his team still don’t know why. “It’s a concern for me,” Hamilton said. The 38-year-old is hoping for insights from the data analysis. “I know what I want and I pray for it. I’m waiting for the day that we get it,” said the 38-year-old.

Hamilton finished fourth in Spa and, despite the hopping problem, still drove the fastest lap of the race. The seven-time champion is also fourth in the World Championship, already 166 points behind Red Bull’s leader Max Verstappen. Hamilton’s team-mate Russell finished the race in sixth place. (dpa)
