Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin, Vows to Avoid Constitutional Crisis in Israel

In closed conversations with his associates, Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin, has made it clear that he will not lead Israel into a constitutional crisis. This statement comes after the High Court of Justice reportedly mandated the convening of the committee for the appointment of judges.

According to Channel 2 news, Levin asserted that he would adhere to the court’s decision and convene the committee if required. However, at this stage, Levin does not intend to do so because the committee’s composition has not yet been completed. Additionally, even after its completion, Levin’s perception of the current coalition’s composition has little impact on the appointment of judges.

Last Friday, in an interview on the “Chosen Ones” program on 100FM, Minister Ofir Akunis expressed his views on the issue, attacking Levin for his reluctance to convene the Committee for the Selection of Judges. Akunis insisted that there is no reason to refrain from appointing judges for local and district courts, particularly for matters related to peace and family.

This recent development highlights a potential clash between the judiciary and the government in Israel. The decision of whether to convene the committee may have far-reaching consequences for the balance of power between the executive and judiciary branches.

While Levin maintains that he will respect the court’s ruling, concerns about his delayed action have been raised. Tali Gottlieb, a critic of Levin, suggests that there may be an attempt from above to weaken his opponent.

As this situation unfolds, the question remains: Will Minister Levin ultimately convene the committee and adhere to the court’s decision, or will this standoff escalate into a constitutional crisis? Only time will tell.
