A gendarme killed this Monday, in Pas-de-Calais, a man who brandished a long bladed weapon. According to our colleagues from The voice of the North, the police were called at the end of the morning in Isbergues in the context of a neighborhood dispute. They faced a man, 66 years old according to the local daily, who threatened them with a katana, a Japanese sword.
He stood in his garden at the front of his house and advanced towards the gendarmes. The soldiers first brandished a taser, ordering him to stop. In vain: the electric shock did not slow down the sexagenarian, says La Voix du Nord. One of the gendarmes then fired his service weapon, fatally hitting him in front of his home.
Firefighters were unable to resuscitate him. The man died on the spot. According to our colleagues, he lived alone. The Béthune public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the fatal shooting, and to establish whether the soldier acted in self-defense.
