At least eight people have died in a police operation in Brazil. This was announced by the governor of the state of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, at a press conference, as reported by the Brazilian newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo” on Monday. Brazilian media had previously reported at least ten dead in the coastal town of Guarujá, citing the São Paulo Police Ombudsman.

According to this, residents of Guarujá reported that police officers had tortured and murdered at least one man and threatened to kill at least 60 people in slums of the city. According to the Folha de S. Fola, the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat said that no abuse by the police had been identified so far and that all allegations were being investigated.

The operation, which began on Friday, was in response to the killing of a police officer, according to Brazilian media. Tarcísio de Freitas, who is considered a moderate supporter of right-wing ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, wrote on Twitter that the shooter who killed the police officer had been caught in the southern zone of the metropolis of São Paulo. “Three people involved have already been arrested. There will be justice. No attack on our police officers will go unpunished.”

In no other country in the world do so many people die in police operations as in Brazil. In 2021, security forces in the South American country killed more than 6,000 people, according to a violence monitor operated by the news portal G1, the Brazilian Forum for Public Safety and the University of São Paulo.

Conditions and working conditions of the police in Europe cannot be compared with those in Brazil. However, human rights activists accuse the police of being excessively harsh.
