THE MORNING LIST

It was in September that the first effects of the strike by American screenwriters and actors began to be felt. In the meantime, the factory continues to run at full speed, mobilizing the stars – Sigourney Weaver, Nicole Kidman or Meryl Streep – and embracing genres.

“Les Fleurs Sauvages”: a tragedy told with flowers

The story of Alice Hart, an orphan marked by an atrocious tragedy, is told both in English (Australian) and in an antipodal version of the language of flowers, based on the wild flora of the island-continent. On screen, the adaptation of Wild flowers, by Holly Ringland (The Pocket Book), exploits this poetic invention to the last sepal, to the point that this universal tragedy sometimes disappears under a heap of bouquets and arrangements. From the fire that swept away her parents – a violent father, a subjugated mother – to her first love which reproduced the original pattern, Alice Hart (Alyla Browne then Alycia Debnam-Carey) moves through an enchanting Australia, on a wild coast to the desert via the horticultural farm where her grandmother, June (Sigourney Weaver), welcomes women seeking refuge. This compassionate and ruthless matriarch figure dominates the seven hours of the series. The authority of Sigourney Weaver, the temerity with which the actress accompanies her character through illness sometimes explode the mannerism of the staging, while making it bearable. T. S.

Series created by Sarah Lambert, based on the novel by Holly Ringland. With Sigourney Weaver, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Leah Purcell, Frankie Adams, Charlie Vickers (Australia, 2023, 7 x 60 min). In entirety on Prime Video from August 3.

“Physical”: it still has to sweat

« This is a story about control » (“It’s all about control”), sings Janet Jackson at the start of the final episode of Physical, summarizing the program of the series developed by Annie Weisman around a bulimic and borderline housewife character, who discovers a semblance of appeasement in aerobics. Nasty parable on the cult of performance, whatever the field, Physical continues in its third and final season its scathing satire on self-obsession. Sheila, now separated from her leftist husband, tries to make her slimming business profitable with the help of Greta, her plump but formidable partner. But as there is always someone to put a spoke in her wheels (and she can no longer count on Vinnie, the flamboyant coach of season 2 played by Murray Bartlett), her rise comes up against the domination of Kelly (Zooey Deschanel), a younger, blonder and above all much more confident gym teacher. The time of a few scenes, the ex-New Girl remember how much we missed her. But, even more than in the previous two seasons, Rose Byrne remains the backbone of the series, while around her the machine of Physical sometimes seems to run a little empty, for lack of ideas and issues. However, we will never be bored, and Physical will have been a wonderful setting for the talent of its main actress. Me. F.
