A 14-year-old girl died in an accident with a train on a level crossing in Gard this Sunday evening, reports France 3 Occitania this Monday.
The tragedy occurred near the old station in the town of Manduel, between Nîmes and Beaucaire. The girl was riding a bicycle in the company of another young girl, when they crossed the railway tracks on a level crossing, on which passed a TER making a connection between Avignon and Perpignan, specifies Gard objective.
The security bars were however lowered, specifies the SNCF to France 3 Occitanie, which reports that nothing indicates that the security system would have malfunctioned at this place.
The victim “thrown more than 10 m”
Witnesses interviewed by the local channel also confirm that the bars were in place. “The barrier worked as usual, it lowered when there was a train coming. And then there are two young girls on bicycles who arrived and crossed. One of them got abducted by the train. The other came out unscathed, ”testified a local resident.
The young girl “kidnapped by the train” was “thrown more than 10 m”, adds another resident. She died on the spot.
Help arrived at the scene of the tragedy around 8:10 p.m., for an intervention that lasted more than four hours, and required three vehicles, as well as nine men. An investigation was opened by the gendarmerie to determine the origin of the accident, which caused a blockage on the TER line in the evening.
