The aim of the German spelling reform in the 1990s was to simplify the sometimes complicated rules. The modified orthography came into force 25 years ago, on August 1, 1998, in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The project was hotly disputed between supporters and opponents.
