Iceland closes embassy in Russia – International

Iceland closed its embassy in Moscow on Tuesday (1), becoming the first European country to do so since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Icelandic Foreign Minister Thrds Gylfadttir announced the decision to close the embassy in June, saying “the current situation simply does not allow the small diplomatic representation” to operate in Russia.

Iceland has specified that this is not a breach of diplomatic relations.

The day after the announcement in June, Moscow criticized an “anti-Russian action” and vowed to retaliate.
