JAKARTA – Commission III of the DPR appreciates the decision of the Supreme Court (MA) which rejected PT Rafi Kamajaya Abadi’s (RKA) cassation request. Including punishing the company with the payment of environmental compensation and recovery of IDR 920 billion in cases of forest and land fires ( Forest and land fires ) in West Kalimantan in 2016-2019.

Deputy Chairman of Commission III DPR Ahmad Sahroni, this sentence is important considering the environmental damage caused is very severe and endangers the future of the environment in the country.

“Look, we have only one earth. We have the second largest rainforest in the world, which is very important for its preservation because it is the lungs of the earth. The matter is with breath which is our main need. That’s why in my opinion, the crime of burning forests like this is a crime against humanity that cannot be underestimated. The fine is very fitting. It’s just a matter of later on how this compensation money is actually used optimally to restore the affected environment,” he said, Tuesday (1/8/2023).

Apart from being good for forest restoration, according to the Nasdem Party politician, this high fine will make other companies that use the practice of burning forests for land-clearing less likely to commit this crime.

“This fine is also a message to other companies that want to carry out similar actions to discourage them. They are thinking again about setting fire to the forest because the fine is up to hundreds of billions,” he said.

Sahroni supports the need for the Supreme Court to issue maximum fines and impoverish forest firers, in order to have a deterrent effect. “It is true that these forest burners are impoverished. Therefore, I thank the Supreme Court for being firm in imposing heavy fines,” he said.
