Tamil Nadu becomes first state in India to receive income tax payer information

Former Tamil Nadu Finance Minister and current Tamil Nadu Technology Minister BDR Palanivel Thiagarajan met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today to discuss the exchange of information on income tax payers within the Goods and Services Tax (GST) council.

During a press conference after the meeting, Palanivel Thiagarajan revealed that when he was Finance Minister, he had requested the exchange of information between states to reduce mistakes and provide a clear picture of the real situation. He also emphasized the importance of income tax payer information being shared with state governments to facilitate welfare schemes and other services.

As a result of these discussions, Tamil Nadu has become the first state in India to receive information on about 35 lakh income tax payers. This is the first time in India’s history that a state has been granted access to detailed information on who pays what taxes.

This information is expected to be highly beneficial for various projects, especially those under the Women’s Entitlement Scheme. With a clearer understanding of the income levels and tax contributions of its residents, the state government can effectively plan and implement initiatives that cater to the needs of the population.

This significant step in information sharing between the central and state governments highlights Tamil Nadu’s commitment to transparency and efficient governance. It serves as a model for other states to follow in order to foster collaboration and enhance decision-making processes.

The exchange of information on income tax payers is a notable development that will pave the way for better utilization of resources and improved service delivery for the people of Tamil Nadu.
