Donald Trump said he expected to be indicted again on Tuesday by the special prosecutor investigating his attempts to reverse the 2020 election result, accusing the official of wanting to obstruct his 2024 campaign.

“I’m told that crackpot Jack Smith, for interfering in the 2024 presidential election, is going to issue a bogus new indictment of your favorite president – me – at 5:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. GMT,” he wrote on its Truth Social platform.

“Why didn’t they do it two and a half years ago? Why did they wait so long? Because they wanted it to happen right in my campaign,” he added.

A big favorite in the Republican primaries even if he is surrounded by business, Donald Trump announced on July 18 that he had received a letter from Jack Smith informing him that he was personally targeted by the federal investigation into attempts to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election, and in particular the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

That day, he held a fiery speech in front of his supporters gathered not far from the White House, calling on them to “fight like the devils” against the results of the presidential election that the elected officials had to certify.

A mob then invaded the Capitol, scenes of violence and chaos that shocked America and the world.

If he is indicted for these facts, these would be the most serious charges to be brought against the former head of state, who has already been prosecuted in the criminal case of the allegedly negligent management of the confidential documents of the White House and that of suspicious payments to a former porn actress.

Donald Trump, 77, this year became the first ex-president of the United States to be criminally charged by federal justice.

Republican base loyalty

The tempestuous politician and billionaire nevertheless retains the loyalty of a good part of his party: he dominates the polls for the Republican nomination and even widens the gap with number 2, the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, who has accumulated missteps since the start of his campaign.

What impact this latest indictment, if confirmed, would have on Donald Trump’s bid for the White House is still unclear. The ex-president has already denounced a “witch hunt”, a new “electoral interference” and a “political use” of justice to prevent him from being a candidate.

Continuing a long campaign of disinformation, Mr. Trump continues to claim, without any proof, that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him.

The troubles may not end there for Donald Trump: a Georgia prosecutor must also announce by September the result of her investigation into the pressure he exerted to try to alter the result of the presidential election of 2020 in this southern state.

Donald Trump left the White House in 2021, having been targeted during his tenure by two impeachment trials: one on charges of pressuring Ukraine to give him embarrassing facts about Joe Biden, l another about his role in the attack on the Capitol.

He had been acquitted in both cases thanks to the Republican majority in the Senate. But several of his supporters have been found guilty and sentenced in these cases, including his 2016 campaign manager and his personal lawyer.
