In a time of escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, residents in some of the most affluent areas of Moscow found themselves grappling with the harsh reality that the war might no longer leave them untouched. As the threat of drone attacks became a part of Ukraine’s strategy, some Russians resorted to pushing the distressing news aside in an attempt to maintain a semblance of normalcy.

Following two incidents involving explosive-laden drones over the weekend, popular Instagram nutritionist Mari Kletanina initially expressed concern about her safety and the possibility of leaving the area or even the country altogether. However, just days later, she seemed to have moved on, focusing on her daily routine and trivial matters like choosing her dress for the day or recommending her favorite perfume.

While Russian state television downplayed the incidents, labeling them as minor and emphasizing the limited damage caused by the drones neutralized through electronic warfare, the country’s government officials took a more serious approach. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, likened the attacks to 9/11, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov acknowledged the clear threat and the ongoing efforts to fortify the capital’s defenses.

Meanwhile, Russian bloggers attempted to portray the drone attacks as desperate acts by Ukraine, aimed at diverting media attention from the progress of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. However, the attacks, which have primarily targeted symbolic locations such as the Kremlin’s Senate Palace and buildings near the military headquarters, have done little physical damage and caused no severe injuries.

The affected towers, hailed as symbols of Russia’s thriving economy and integration into the global market, were hit over the weekend and on Tuesday. The sudden interruption of this oil-fueled prosperity came as a result of Ukraine’s invasion. As a response to the attacks, the Russian digital development ministry relocated its staff to work from home.

Observers noted that despite initial concerns, many Russian residents, particularly those living in luxury apartments, were determined to carry on with their daily lives, relying on the belief that the incidents would be an isolated affair. However, real estate agents such as Maksim Khodyrev reported receiving letters from worried tenants canceling lease agreements due to safety concerns, suggesting that if attacks persist, it could have lasting effects on the housing market and overall stability.

While some residents consciously or unconsciously ignored the ongoing tensions, attempting to preserve a sense of normalcy, the implications of the drone attacks continued to loom over Moscow. Whether the incidents fade from memory or persist in the coming months remains to be seen, but the resilience and adaptability of the city’s elite are being tested as the conflict unfolds.
