An armed man attacked a worker at the consulate of Sweden in the city of Izmirlocated in the far west of Turkey, during a bureaucratic process to obtain a visa.

According to a statement sent by the Izmir governor’s office, the attack occurred around 12:45 p.m. (local time), when an armed man, identified as “mentally challenged”, injured an employee of the consular office.

“Our security agents detained him along with the weapon he used during the incident and a judicial investigation is already underway,” he said, adding that the employee, seriously injured, has been transferred to a hospital in the city.

The Turkish Justice Minister, Yilmaz Tunc, has condemned the event on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter. “I wish a speedy recovery to our citizen who was injured in the attack,” he added.

This incident occurs in a context marked by acts of protest in Sweden where copies of the Koran, the sacred book of the Islam. Already in mid-July a group of protesters stormed and burned the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad. Several Muslim countries have summoned Swedish diplomatic representatives to their territory.
