Thomas Dutronc in Marciac (Gers), July 31, 2023. LAURENT SABATHE

Double concert in Marciac (Gers), Monday July 31: Florin Niculescu, violin, and his Gipsy All Stars. Then the guitar trio made up of Thomas Dutronc, Rocky Gresset and Stochelo Rosenberg. Dutronc has just invited a solid companion, double bass player Thomas Bramerie, to join the group. Four, for a trio, is more prudent.

With its deceptively playful titles, its lyrics à la Prévert, its Little Nothingsses little happinessson I like more paris, Thomas Dutronc could well be the champion of hypocoristics. Do not panic: the hypocoristic is quite simply this way of using a diminutive or an adjective in affectionate attention.

As long as he sings a flower, Thomas Dutronc chooses it « petite ». By the way, his version of the little Sidney Bechet song, Little Flower (words by Henri Salvador), is the most delicate, the most exact. Whispered or hummed, parted lips, mastery of the microphone (all her father!).

Distanced Clown

Thomas Dutronc sings, speaks, presents, plays the distanced clown, gives pride of place to his partners. He knows where he is. He doesn’t cheat. He knows how to surround himself. He likes to travel with others, and at the artists’ and technicians’ restaurant, he is the one who sets the mood. It holds the marquee for 5,000 spectators, like a bistro at Les Puces…

He doesn’t think he’s Django’s son. He knows whose son he is. He knows that Stochelo Rosenberg and Rocky Grasset are undisputed big names. He did the job modestly, for years, in second or third place among the groups of Biréli Lagrène. He has already been here, to Marciac, several times.

Read the interview: Thomas Dutronc: “My father impressed me, I felt he was not like the others”

No more than Jean-Louis Guilhaumon, director of Jazz In Marciac, Dutronc does not go astray: he leaves the chorus (the improvisations) to Stochelo, Rocky Gresset and to the other Thomas, Bramerie. Which perform perfectly. Him, he offers himself two, more than serious, and takes great pleasure in playing.

Gypsy jazz is distinguished by its accent, its spirit. Accompanying (“doing the push-up”) is no less demanding than improvising at two miles an hour. We could talk about arrangements that seem like nothing, the distribution of roles, rhymes or assonances that seem to spring up laughing (L’Horoscope, Miro Tata Mimer). Everything looks so easy.

An exquisite sense of stitching

It would be unfair for Florin Niculescu. Born in Budapest into a Roma family (1967), he had the elegance, for a concert dedicated to Stéphane Grappelli, to invite the British guitarist Martin Taylor, who was fed from the age of 4 by a father crazy about Django (in Essex); Martin Taylor, long time accompanist of the illustrious Grappelli. Django is a universal language: a kind of very fragile, very complex Esperanto, under its little airs of having your hands in your pockets.
