Munich Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone’s lips. AI-based systems promise unknown possibilities in the application. They process huge amounts of data with the help of algorithms. The systems are constantly learning from new information.

So far, however, only a small proportion of German companies have made use of the new technology. This has now been shown by an Ifo survey. Accordingly, AI is currently used in 13.3 percent of German companies. However, there are major differences between sectors.

AI hardly plays a role in the construction industry

While industrial companies apparently have high hopes for AI, retailers – including both wholesalers and retailers – are still struggling with the use of artificial intelligence, according to the Ifo survey.

The Handelsblatt editorial team recommends

According to the institute, AI-supported applications are already integrated into the operating processes in 17.3 percent of the manufacturing industry, including industrial companies from the automotive industry, mechanical engineering and the pharmaceutical industry. Another 12.9 percent of the industry are planning to use AI. Around every third industrial company uses or plans with AI.

This still applies to a fifth of the trading companies. In the construction industry, on the other hand, interest in AI is still limited: For 60 percent of the companies surveyed, AI is currently not an issue at all – 7.1 percent of the industry use the technology and 7.9 percent plan to use AI. Overall, 40 percent of the 9,000 German companies surveyed stated that AI was not important for their company.
