L’any 2019 Sergi Mach stopped playing at Curbs looking for a step forward in his career. That did not mean a simple goodbye to a club where he had grown up a lot, but also saying goodbye to his younger brother, in Davidwith whom he shared a wardrobe.

Since then, they had never met again, with the pandemic or the draw of groups avoiding seeing each other’s faces when there was the possibility. Now, however, both will coincide in the Basinteam where the older brother, central, will start the third season, and where the younger, goalkeeper, arrives to do his debut in Liga Asobal and in European competition (EHF). The Enchanted City viu one of the best moments in its history, with last year’s second place being the highest position ever achieved by the club. At the behest of Lidio Jimenezwhich Sergi describes as “the star of the team”, the two brothers from Sarrià de Ter want to be part of this story.

The big one, in fact, has been doing it for a while. “He is one of those players who improve your environment, he has always been a pillar wherever he has played and excelled, because he is a leader and sees the game in a special way”, describes David. For him, that the last year and a half had been a key piece in the Zamora’s fight for permanence, the jump is big. “I have to adapt little by little and focus on improve individuallythe first step is to do it in training and then in the category, transferring the work done on the court”, he explains, aware that “the minutes do not depend on the players, but there is a moment when they arrive and you have to be thereand, even if you haven’t gone out for a while.” This hard-working nature, Sergi says, has been “instilled in them since childhood”, and in David he sees a goalkeeper “with abilities that there are few, for height and technique that he has” Fixar pel Conca is an “opportunity he deserved, and he will take advantage of it”, he says.

The team plays EHF, and the requirement of two competitions means that a large staff has been considered. “This gives a lot of play, there are many games, and the more, the better, training is good but I like to play!” says the newcomer.

Live on and off the court

The last time they wore the same colors, in Bordils, both were in different stages. “I was starting to train with the first team and Sergi was already playing, and it was when he left that I had more minutes”, recalls David, “motivated” by the reunion. On the court, they value the “trust” that they have, but both believe that “it’s not much different than with another teammate”. “The important thing is to transmit an idea and for the other person to receive it, and the closer you are, the better, we carry that as standard!”, comments the elder. The porter still jokes, because “now that I’ve just arrived, I’m sure I won’t be confused by his name!”

Off the track, in addition, the Mach brothers share a flat in Conca. “It’s an experience, we’ve lived together, with our parents, but now it’s different”, explains Sergi, who sees in David, in addition to a brother, “a friend”. Of course, he warns, “some batuses will surely fall!” In any case, having the brother at home, especially in the first days, is something to be thankful for for the little one: “I have a personal guide, and there is a lot of fun with the group and in the afternoons we get together.” When it comes to training, however, this does not imply a lower pace, and in a few days the goalkeeper already notices it: “There is a lot of intensity without generating anxiety, and that is good”. One of the keys to the recent success of the Basin it’s this one The central assesses that “we all get along very well and the core hasn’t changed that much, and that makes the adaptation a little easier, in addition, David is an open person and it’s not difficult for him”.

Sergi Mach: “The best moment of my career is yet to come”

Made friends, it’s also necessary get to know the citywhich, due to the large Mach, “is small, a bit like Girona, for the treatment of the people and the family atmosphere, which almost everyone knows each other». The little boy, who had already visited his brother in other years, thinks it is “a very good place, with nature and parks nearby, and much more life than it seems”. For now, he will be there for at least one year, with an optional second to be agreed with the club, which “I imagine that, if I do well and things agree, it will be done, but it is a long way off and I am focusing on this season” . Sergi has already won communion with the board. Last year he improved the records of the first by 20 goals, going from 41 to 61 in Asobal, and with his game he deserved a contract until 2025.

A city that breathes handball

This is Conca, where the two Machs have clear la “special relationship between the people and the club”. Sergi even compares it to what has been going on in recent years in Girona with football: “They stop you in the street and ask you for photos, here handball is the first sport». The players, of course, appreciate it. “We live off the people who come on Saturdays, El Sargal (the pavilion) is a pass and is full every week,” says the elder. The last year has seen how the Furia Conquense accompanied them on trips even to Denmark. Knowing this, David is dying to play in front of a “spectacular” crowd.

Looking ahead to next year, Sergi, with more background, is confident of “competing in the first phase of the European competition and going through the rounds, as well as getting good results at state level”. With the energy they give off and from their individual role, the Mach brothers will certainly add up.
