The Government has approved the transfer of 3.9 million euros to APM Terminals Barcelonathrough the Moves Proyectos Singulares II Program for Efficient and Sustainable Mobility, to support part of the pilot project that will electrify container handling equipment, which estimates a drop of 821 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

The solution, which the company is designing together with its suppliers, will involve the purchase of five zero-emission electric Straddle Carriers, four charging stations, civil and electrical works, the computer network and the development of programs and processes to be able to work with this technology.

The main objective is to strengthen the technical and economic viability of the project, which will favor the reduction of polluting emissions, the optimization of processes and its scalability to other terminals whose merchandise is handled with similar machinery.

The Catalan enclave has classified these measures as an advance in the environmental objectives of the port and the city, since it enables a lower noise level and better air quality due to the absence of emissions.

Likewise, it is estimated that the availability of machinery will improve, as well as maintenance processes and the creation of a cleaner and safer work environment thanks to the significant drop in the use of oil in daily operations and the generation of waste.

In addition to the fact that the electric Straddle Carriers are zero emissions, it is worth mentioning that the electricity contracted by the terminal is exclusively from renewable sources, and its continuity has been planned until at least 2032, by virtue of the agreement reached with the distributor.

On the other hand, the Port of Barcelona has closed an agreement with Orange so that the telecommunications operator implements a 5G Stand Alone network in its facilities, which will offer service to the 500 companies that carry out their activity in the port area.
