Västtrafik’s Proposal: Removing Four Stops in Gothenburg to Accommodate New Trams

60 New Trams to be Launched in Gothenburg Next Summer

Gothenburg, Sweden – In an effort to improve public transportation in Gothenburg, Västtrafik has announced the arrival of 60 new trams. These 45-meter long trams are expected to start operating next summer, with lines 5 and 11 being the first routes to implement the new trams.

To accommodate the new trams, approximately half of the stops along these lines will need to be extended. However, Västtrafik is also proposing the removal of four stops – Ättehögsgatan, Sanatoriegatan, Bäckeliden on line 5, and the Rowing Association on line 11.

Västtrafik conducted an investigation to analyze travel times and seating capacity on the trams. The study revealed that removing these four stops would shorten travel time between Kaggeledstorget and Sankt Sigfridsplan by 2 minutes, reducing it from 13 minutes to 11 minutes.

Mette Ramquist, the press manager at Västtrafik, explained that the decision to remove these stops was based on factors such as distances to nearby stops, state development plans in the area, accessibility, and safety. Ramquist clarified that the stops selected for removal had relatively few boardings and alightings and were often in close proximity to other stops.

Västtrafik emphasized that there must be fewer than two boardings and alightings per trip at the stops recommended for removal. According to Ramquist, the majority of residents in these areas already choose alternate stops, making the proposed changes more feasible. However, she acknowledged that the adjustments may inconvenience individual travelers who are used to using these stops.

The proposal has been presented to politicians in Stadstrafikforum for Gothenburg, Mölndal, and Partille. Västtrafik ultimately makes the decision but aims to reach an agreement with politicians to ensure efficient travel for residents. The final decision is expected to be made in the fall, and if approved, the changes will be implemented next summer.

The addition of the new trams is part of Västtrafik’s ongoing efforts to improve the public transportation system in Gothenburg. This follows their previous announcement of purchasing 20 super-long trams. The company aims to provide more efficient and comfortable transportation options for residents and visitors.
