Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian power transmission system operators Litgrid, AST and Elering signed an agreement to synchronize the power grids of the Baltic States with Western Europe in February 2025, BNS reports.

The agreement also provides that in the summer of 2024, six months before the synchronization, the Baltic countries will refuse to renew the contract of the Moscow-controlled post-Soviet energy system (BRELL), concluded with Russian and Belarusian operators, Lithuanian electricity grid operator Litgrid said.

“Together with our partners, we have agreed on specific actions and terms for disconnecting from the Russian system and joining the Synchronous Grid of Continental Europe. For the first time, the operators of the three countries jointly assumed clear obligations to complete the synchronization within the agreed timeframe – in February 2025, ”said Rokas Masiulis, head of Litgrid.

By February 2025, the necessary work will be completed – the installation of the first synchronous expansion joints, the installation of control systems and the reconstruction of the third line between Estonia and Latvia. Other projects related to synchronization will be implemented by the end of 2025 or later.

According to an agreement signed in 2018 between the leaders of the Baltic states and the European Commission (EC), Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were to be synchronized with the networks of continental Europe by the end of 2025.

Previously, Lithuania wanted synchronization to take place even earlier – in 2024, but Latvia and Estonia did not agree to this.

The Latvian and Estonian power grid operators AST and Elering have previously told BNS that early 2025 is the earliest, technically and economically most appropriate date to synchronize the power grids of the Baltic States with Western Europe.
