He further added that the cloud could also form over bodies of water emitting steam, which subsequently reaches the stratosphere under calm wind conditions, as witnessed in Kazan.
The recent heightened tensions due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, coupled with repeated nuclear threats from Russian leaders and drone attacks in Moscow, contributed to the already anxious atmosphere surrounding the appearance of the mushroom cloud in Kazan.

Similar occurrences of these unusual cloud formations have also been observed in other parts of the world, including Eskilstuna, Sweden, last year. Meteorologist Emma Härenstam from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) attributed the formation of such clouds to the sun’s increased strength during spring and summer seasons, which causes the air at ground level to heat up and create cumulus clouds.
While the appearance of the mushroom cloud may have initially alarmed residents, the confirmation from experts that it was a natural weather phenomenon brought a sense of relief among the population of Kazan.
