The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) will not repeat its critical assessment of the AfD federal party conference and the candidates elected there for the European elections for the time being. In a judicial proceeding, the administrative court in Cologne announced on Friday that it would not make any statements during the European election meeting this weekend. “The BfV is bound by this promise,” said a spokesman. The promise was made without acknowledgment of a legal obligation.

After the first part of the party conference last weekend, BfV President Thomas Haldenwang told the German Press Agency that representatives of the former more moderate camp had played almost no role. “Rather, various candidates for election expressed right-wing extremist conspiracy theories, such as those of the so-called ‘Great Exchange’.”

The AfD then filed an urgent application with the administrative court in Cologne to refrain from doing so during the continuation of the European election meeting this weekend and beyond. However, the court did not follow this further requirement. A possible impairment of the party’s internal decision-making is no longer to be feared after the conclusion of the European election assembly. And a possible impairment of the federal German decision-making process in the state elections in Bavaria and Hesse on October 8th is not of overriding importance.

From the point of view of the AfD, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has not only “gagged its own president with a muzzle, but at the same time avoided a court conviction”.

After the end of the European election assembly, the urgent procedure will have to be continued in order to obtain a judicial ban on the statements. “Haldenwang is again trying to exert political influence from his office,” criticized party chairmen Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla.

From this Friday to Sunday in Magdeburg, the AfD wants to complete its list for the European elections next year. Last weekend, the first 15 of 30 places were determined. The election program will then be discussed.
