Title: Virologist Reveals ATK Test Kits Can Still Be Used Despite Expiration Date

Date: 4 Aug. 2023

In an important announcement, Dr. Anant Chongkaewwatana, Virologist and Director of Animal Health Innovation and Management Research Group at The National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Biotech), has revealed that ATK (Antigen Test Kit) for COVID-19 is often hoarded, believed to be unusable, and discarded once the expiration date on the box has passed. However, the virologist advises against throwing them away as ATKs can still be utilized for another 10 months to 2 years.

In a Facebook post on August 4, 2023, Dr. Chongkaewwatana emphasized the importance of using ATKs before they expire and debunked the misconception that the expiration date automatically renders them ineffective. The expiration date specified on the box is a regulatory requirement imposed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to insufficient data on test efficacy testing during production. Thus, it does not signify that the test kit is no longer reliable.

“Expire for many brands of ATK (in principle, probably all brands that have been allowed to use) for at least 10 months, some brands can continue for another 2 years,” stated Dr. Chongkaewwatana. He further added, “You don’t have to rush to leave. Probably still usable. But if it’s too long, I don’t recommend it. Risk of erroneous results, believing that the new lot that comes out will have a longer expiration date.”

This groundbreaking revelation provides a much-needed reassurance for individuals who have ATKs in their possession, especially during these times when the availability of COVID-19 testing kits remains a crucial aspect in combating the ongoing pandemic. The virologist’s message encourages people to check the expiration date on the ATKs they have and use them within the extended period mentioned to ensure the accuracy of results.

It is worth noting that while ATKs may still be functional beyond their stated expiration date, caution must be exercised. As newer lots of ATKs are produced with longer expiration dates, it is recommended to rely on those rather than excessively extending the use of older kits.

This revelation highlights the importance of proper information dissemination regarding COVID-19 testing materials. Dr. Chongkaewwatana’s expertise serves as a valuable guide for the public, ensuring they make the most effective use of the resources available to them.

As the world continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the pandemic, such insights from esteemed virologists play a significant role in shaping our understanding and approach towards managing COVID-19.]
