Khartoum: (www.kvartha.com 03.02.2022) Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk has resigned amid growing protests. There has been a massive uprising in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, over the past few days, demanding an end to the military’s crackdown. Two people were killed as the army tried to quell the uprising.

Addressing the nation before resigning, Hamduk said that Sudan was doing its utmost to prevent the country from slipping into ruin and that Sudan was going through a dire situation that could adversely affect its survival.

The last few days have been marked by massive protests in Khartoum under the slogan of full democratic governance. On October 25, 2021, the army overthrew the government of Abdullah Hamduk and seized power. Hamduk was then placed under house arrest.

However, it was agreed that elections would be held in July 2023, and in November Hamduk was re-elected Prime Minister. But there were strong protests against the sharing of power with the military. The military liberated Sudan in 2019 from the three – decade – long dictatorship of President Omar al – Bashir.

Despite Bashir’s ouster, the people took to the streets demanding an end to military rule and the coming of a people’s government, but the military declared a state of emergency for three months and froze the constitution, saying it would form an interim council with popular representation. Despite the appointment of Prime Minister Hamdouk as a handover of power to the civilian government, the military chief was still in power.
