The high court has a conservative majority reinforced by him when he ruled. The Democratic Party requests that its trial for intervening in the 2020 elections be broadcast on television

Donald Trump he is the first former US president accused of trying to interfere in American democracy. Until 2024, the millionaire will be forced to combine the electoral campaign with which he seeks to return to the White House with the requirements of the different judicial processes that he faces.

Trump seems willing to keep up the masquerade. To his continued assertions that he faces prosecution from the Department of Justice, on Friday, less than a day after going through court, he had a new occurrence: ask the Supreme Court through social networks to “intercede” in his trial. An idea that, like everything that surrounds his attempts to subvert the 2020 elections, points to what could happen if he returned to the White House. And it is that Trump urges the Supreme Court in this way because he has a conservative majority reinforced by himself when he governed.

This time is different for Trump

In 2020, all of Trump’s attempts to stay in power failed. The system of safeguards that rests on American democracy withstood the authoritarian attacks of the outgoing president. Of course, along the way, American democracy lost the confidence of a portion of its electorate—convinced by the hoaxes of the former president—, witnessed an attempt to physically violate the transfer of powers between presidents, and saw how Trump became the first former head of state to be charged in three court cases different in less than six months.

Now, with the 2024 elections on the horizon, Donald Trump has a chance to return to the White House. At the moment, he not only dominates the Republican primaries with ease, but also, according to the polls, he is practically tied with Joe Biden. It has about 43% of the electoral support. Between now and the presidential elections, the electoral landscape may change, but if it does not, or if it does so little, Trump could become the first defendant elected president of the United States.

The charges of the former president’s third indictment accuse him of trying to violate American democracy. He did it, according to the accusation, through his lies about his victory in the 2020 elections, trying to manipulate part of the results in your favor and, when all else failed, trying to stop the process of certifying the electoral results.

In front of him, Joe Biden he is focused on his efforts to talk about the good state of the economy. Thus, after the third accusation of his predecessor, now for attacking US democracy, the most deafening silence was that of the White House.

The trial, on television

That is not why the Democratic Party has given up the opportunity presented by the imputation. On the contrary: just 24 hours after Trump pleaded not guilty, some three dozen Democratic congressmen petitioned the judge, Roslynn Mauskopf, director of the Administrative Office of the US Courts, for the judicial process to be broadcast on television. Looking ahead to 2024, the Democrats are confident that the electorate will choose democracy over Trump. For his part, John Lauro, one of Trump’s lawyers, has accepted the proposal. Since the millionaire’s campaign, moreover, they seem convinced that influencing the hoax of the “witch hunt” is the most direct path to the nomination first, and perhaps to the White House later.
