Three out of four people who make a purchase in malls usually research the price of the merchandise on the internet first. This is one of the findings of a broad survey of consumer habits carried out by the Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers (Abrasce).

Price research using online channels is not seen as a surprise by the association, which, in the study, points to this new habit as an opportunity to support the digitalization of small and medium-sized retailers, to offer more possibilities to customers of this profile.

The survey also showed that 43% of the total number of consumers who participated in the questionnaire declared that they had already made a purchase on a shopping center’s digital channel, be it the official website, WhatsApp or another electronic means. And 35% have a shopping app on their cell phone.

Despite the competition with e-commerce, the mall still fulfills its role as a shopping center, although other attractions have a more relevant weight. For 43% of respondents, shopping is the main reason for a visit, while another 31% say they go for leisure, 21% for food and 5% for services.

Among other data, the survey points out that 24% consider the location as the most important factor in choosing the mall and 22% opt for the development based on the mix of stores.

On the other hand, 46% of consumers prefer shopping in malls as they consider them to be a safe place and 36% consider them to be a practical place to solve their day-to-day needs.

Among shoppers, 65% go to the mall with their own vehicle and the average length of stay is 80 minutes.

“Getting to know shoppers more deeply and capturing their feelings and perceptions are fundamental attitudes for the shopping center sector, which was extremely resilient during the pandemic and which is now resuming its role in people’s daily lives with full force”, he said, in a note the president of Abrasce, Glauco Humai.
