Emergency meeting on severe weather Petar – Which areas will be affected

An extraordinary meeting was held at Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protectionunder Minister Vassilis Kikilia, in view of the weather system named Petar which is expected to hit Greece from noon on Saturday, with heavy rains and storms, a high frequency of lightning and local hail.

The aim of the meeting was the optimal coordination of all co-competent bodies.

The minister emphasized that the entire Civil Protection mechanism is being put on high alert and stressed the need for full readiness, so that the necessary preventive measures can be taken and any problems that may arise due to the upcoming dangerous weather phenomena can be dealt with immediately.

Mr. Kikilias asked to be shown ispecial attention to the areas expected to be affected by the phenomena and in which outdoor events are planned.

In the context of the meeting, it was decided to activate 112, if deemed necessary to send warning messages to specific areas depending on the evolution of the phenomena.

Alongside, Citizens are strongly advised to be very carefulto follow the instructions of the authorities and to take all the necessary self-protection measures, in accordance with the instructions of the Public Health Service.

According to the Emergency Deterioration of Weather Bulletin issued on Friday by the National Meteorological Service, the weather system “PETAR”, as it was named by the Italian Meteorological Service, is moving east and is expected to cause a temporary worsening of the weather in areas of western and northern Greecefrom the midday hours of Saturday until the early morning hours of Sunday, with the main characteristics being the heavy rains and storms that they will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning and local hail.

The areas that will be affected

From the midday hours of Saturday, the northern Ionian (mainly the Corfu-Paxos area), Epirus, western Macedonia and western Sterea are expected to be affected, and from the late afternoon the northwestern Peloponnese, western and northern Thessaly and central Macedonia.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Ministers of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas and Christos Triandopoulos, the General Secretary of Civil Protection Vassilios Papageorgiou, the General Secretary of Natural Disasters and State Aid Petros Kambouris, representatives of the Fire Brigade and the Hellenic Police, the Director of EMY Theodoros Kolydas and a scientific team of meteorologists, as well as the Regional Governors of Western Greece Nektarios Farmakis, Thessaly Konstantinos Agorastos and Western Macedonia Giorgos Kasapidis, the Deputy Regional Governor of Civil Protection of Western Macedonia Thomas Manos, the Deputy Regional Governor of Corfu Konstantinos Zorbas, the Director of Civil Protection of the Epirus Region Emitris Mavrioorgos and the Director of Civil Protection of the Region of Central Macedonia Charalambos Stergiadis.
