The Union of Civil Guard Officers has already denounced in the National Court the promoters of the festivities of the Etxarri Aranatz Town Hall (Navarra), governed by EH Bildu, for including in their program the commemoration of the so-called “Day of the useless” to through a poster showing two agents burned at the stake.

The association confirms in a statement that “in the face of institutional passivity”, last Thursday it filed a complaint against those responsible for the festive program of which it is a part, it stresses, “a poster in which civil guards are burned and includes symbols that represent the expulsion of the Civil Guard” thus giving continuity “to one of the historical demands of ETA”.

For the complainant group, this party intends “not only to ridicule the Civil Guard, but to create a climate of terror that could also mean an exaltation of terrorism, given that the Civil Guard has been one of the main actors in the face of terrorism in ETA”.

Attacking the agents of the Armed Institute for this reason, maintains the Union of Officers (which does not rule out that the facts could constitute a hate crime), “supposes an alignment with those who exercised terrorism.” “Provoking and fostering a climate of hatred and terror is not a trivial matter – he maintains – but ends up translating into events such as those unfortunately that occurred in the nearby town of Alsasua, where several civil guards were attacked.”

“Impose Hate”

Yesterday, the professional association Justice for the Civil Guard (Jucil) announced that its legal services are studying whether to take legal action against the organizers of the “Day of the useless” in view of the possible commission of a crime “directed especially against the people who are part of the group of the Civil Guard and their families”.

Jucil said in a statement that Justice has to act “against those who violate democracy, impose hatred on a part of Spanish society and do not hesitate to take criminal initiatives such as the one carried out in Etxarri Aranatz”.

“At this moment there are civil guards and their families in a part of Spain who are directly threatened, and it is not due to common crime, but rather from public institutions, from a municipal administration, from which hateful behavior towards them and towards their families”, denounced the General Secretary of Communication of Jucil, Agustín Leal, who demanded from the Government “an honest and honorable attitude in which they defend the people who are part of the Civil Guard”.

For the association, “burning human figures of civil guards is a clear example of encouragement of hatred towards people by political leaders”, for which reason it urged the Executive to demand that the Prosecutor’s Office “take action”.

Something similar to what Dignity and Justice (DyJ) expects, which called for the “humiliation and harassment” of the Civil Guard to be prevented with the celebration of the “Day of the useless”, which the association chaired by Daniel Portero has been since denouncing for years.

Portero regretted that the “public mockery of the Civil Guard, agents who have given their lives for democracy and the rule of law” is once again allowed through the symbolic burning of figures representing members of the Armed Institute, with which Bildu stages his claim to expulsion from the Civil Guard of the Basque Country and Navarra.

“The terrorists have assassinated dozens of civil guards throughout their history, they have humiliated them, they have burned their barracks, they have killed their children and their partners,” complained the president of DyJ, son of the former chief prosecutor of Andalusia Luis Portero, assassinated by ETA in 2000.

“It is no joke that now a democratic City Hall celebrates this type of act that revictimizes the relatives of those murdered and humiliates a body that has sustained the democratic spirit in defense of legality and Justice in the fight against terrorism,” he said. Porter, who urged the Prosecutor’s Office to “investigate ex officio” an act that, under that festive appearance, “only has the objective of harassing the agents and mocking the Civil Guard.”
