It’s just a few steps and suddenly you’re in a different world: the horizon has disappeared, the shadows are deeper, the sky is further away. It’s cooler too. Entering a forest somewhere in Germany during the day can seem almost magical – but at dusk? Or in the dark? Most people don’t feel comfortable at all in the forest at night. We probably just carry too much around with us for that, horror film sequences, fragments of fairy tales from childhood, maybe also memories of a distant past that we never experienced ourselves.

Going into the forest at night feels like crossing borders. The fact that it is strangely quiet, appropriately enough, has something to do with the time of day. Many animals in the forest are sleeping now. During the day, the human presence is immediately noticed, especially the birds then send acoustic signals to the other forest dwellers, warning calls, hectic flapping, small branches that break off and fall down. At night, most of these sentries rest. Other animals in the forest are now wide awake. And roam.
