The scandal that affects the son of the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, arrested on July 29 on charges of money laundering and illicit enrichment, has escalated into a political conflict that directly affects the president, with consequences yet to be elucidated.
After the arrest of Nicolás Petro, the Colombian president published a message on the social network X, formerly known as Twitterin which he recognized that “so much self-destruction and the fact that one of my children goes to jail” hurt him a lot.

Gustavo Petro’s eldest son confessed to the Prosecutor’s Office that he received money which was later used to pay for his father’s campaign.
“I call your attention in this regard, Mr. Judge, about the financing of the past presidential campaign of the current president Gustavo Petro and the money that entered said campaign, which, apparently, would have exceeded the limits allowed by law (since) a part of that money would not have been duly reported to the electoral authorities,” said prosecutor Mario Burgos. , as reported by Radio Caracol.
“Part of this money was used by Nicolás Petro and Days Vásquez (his ex-partner) for their personal benefit and to increase their assets unjustifiably and thus launder the assets resulting from that increase in assets,” added the prosecutor. The other part of the money, as Burgos explained, was invested in the 2022 presidential campaign. In addition, “large sums of money from large businessmen” were entered into the campaign without submitting a notification.
The serious accusation of his son has forced Gustavo Petro to speak again this Saturday, radically rejecting Nicolás’ accusations.

“The campaign did not receive any money of an illicit nature,” Petro assured in a message posted on his X social network account, shortly after both his son and the latter’s ex-wife, also accused, Daysuris Vásquez, have received probation.

The president, who commissioned an investigation against his son in March, has assured once again that will not hinder the judicial process. “I will not put pressure on justice in his case as president, the judicial officials who intervene in his process will be my respect,” he added.
The president, likewise, has indicated that he only learned of his son’s alleged criminal activities from a meeting with his first-born’s ex-wife “just a few months ago” when he commissioned the investigation.
“What happened to my son is terrible and very unfortunate for me. I hope one day I can talk to him and forgive us,” he said. “Even in the most terrible things, one learns that all my sons and daughters, including Nicolás and myself, we can with this hard experience be better human beings“, has added.
