Netherlands to Face Spain in Quarterfinals of 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

SYDNEY – The Netherlands secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating South Africa 2-0 in the knockout stages on Sunday. The victory, however, came at a cost as star midfielder Daniëlle van de Donk received her second yellow card of the tournament, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension.

The Dutch team showed their dominance early on as Jill Roord scored a header off a corner in the ninth minute, giving them an early lead. South Africa had a chance to equalize in stoppage time in the first half, but Dutch goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar denied Thembi Kgatlana’s opportunity.

In the second half, the Netherlands extended their lead when the South African goalkeeper made a costly mistake, allowing Lineth Beerensteyn to score. Despite South Africa’s efforts, the Dutch maintained control throughout the match.

The Netherlands, who lost in the 2019 World Cup final to the USWNT, won Group E partly thanks to a draw against the Americans. Their dominant performance against South Africa was evident, as they had 72% possession and a significant advantage in passes.

Their next challenge will be facing Spain in the quarterfinals. Spain dominated Switzerland with a resounding 5-1 victory in their Round of 16 match on Friday, setting up an exciting clash against the Netherlands. The quarterfinal match is scheduled to take place on Thursday at Wellington Regional Stadium at 9 p.m. ET.

However, the Dutch will have to face Spain without van de Donk, who will be serving her suspension. It remains to be seen how this absence will impact the team’s performance.

With both teams showcasing their abilities in the tournament so far, the Netherlands vs. Spain quarterfinal promises to be an intense and thrilling encounter. Football fans around the world will be eagerly awaiting this matchup as the World Cup excitement continues to soar.
