Summer trains, trains and the beach, a relationship with a lot of history that the program ‘De Vuelta’, with a script by Ana Cabanes, head of Documentary Heritage at the Foundation, recounted yesterday Sunday.
The arrival of the railway to San Sebastián, in 1864, favored the Court moving there in summer and the Cantabrian became fashionable among the upper classes, the only ones who could spend the summer at that time, with the intense thermal activity of the region and the ‘cold beach’ baths.
Later came ‘wave’ tourism, which was more popular, and both private companies and Renfe created special services and fares to reach Spanish beaches and launched campaigns to popularize summer trains to beach destinations.
Very well known were the ‘Costa del Sol’, the ‘Costa Brava’, the ‘Costa Blanca’ and other large trains named after the coast. And, of course, the ‘beach trains’, which have been going every summer for decades in search of light, sun, water and wind from the beaches.

Since September 2022, the Spanish Railways Foundation has participated every week with a space dedicated to its areas of activity and other issues with railway implications, in the Radio 5 program ‘De Vuelta’ which, directed by Inmaculada Palomares, is broadcast on Sundays between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
