A 17-year-old boy was killed and a 19-year-old woman seriously injured in an accident in an amusement park in Cap d’Agde (Hérault), on the Mediterranean coast, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, said the public prosecutor of Béziers.
Around 1:50 a.m., “two people were victims of an accident while using the attraction named + Adrenaline +: a 17-year-old teenager, who died of his injuries, and a 19-year-old young woman transported to the CHU Montpellier in absolute urgency,” prosecutor Raphaël Balland said in a statement.
The days of the young woman were no longer in danger on Sunday evening, said the magistrate.
The two victims “would have hit obstacles during their fall, this attraction consisting of tipping over in the void attached to ropes connected to pillars, causing a pendulum movement after a fall of about sixty meters”, specified the prosecutor.
A judicial investigation was opened in flagrante by the public prosecutor’s office of Béziers on the counts of homicide and involuntary injuries.
Four men, including the manager of Luna Park, taken into custody very quickly after the accident, were released in the early evening, but the investigation is continuing to determine the causes of the accident.
It was windy during the night, “which is very rare in Agde”, explained to AFP the mayor of the town, Gilles d’Ettore, indicating that gusts could be the cause of the accident. .
No municipal decree has been taken in the past to stop this type of carousel in the event of wind, because the question had never arisen in this commune, also explained Gilles d’Ettore.
