Children with ADHD do not experience fewer symptoms from an elimination diet compared to those who follow normal dietary guidelines, according to research conducted by Character, RIVM, and specialized dieticians. The elimination diet aims to remove allergens and triggers from the child’s eating pattern.

During the study, Character observed 84 children with ADHD who followed the elimination diet for five weeks. This involved avoiding cow’s milk, gluten, and artificial coloring agents. Surprisingly, only 35 percent of these children experienced a reduction in ADHD symptoms.

On the other hand, half of the 81 children who followed a healthy diet based on nutritional guidelines reported a decrease in symptoms related to ADHD. This led the researchers to conclude that a healthy diet is more effective in managing ADHD symptoms compared to eliminating allergens and triggers.

Both groups of children, regardless of the diet they followed, experienced some physical improvements. They displayed improved heart rates and blood pressure and reported fewer complaints like headaches and stomach aches. However, those who followed the elimination diet also reported fewer sleep problems.

Although the short-term results of the study suggest that food allergies or hypersensitivity are not associated with the severity of ADHD symptoms, the researchers believe that some children may experience worsened behavior due to minor nutritional deficiencies. As a result, they recommend following a healthy diet that aligns with established guidelines for healthy eating.

The researchers also emphasized the need for further research into the long-term effects of diet on ADHD treatment. Their goal is to include dietary treatment in the official guidelines for managing ADHD.

In conclusion, while the elimination diet did not prove more effective in reducing ADHD symptoms, a healthy diet based on nutritional guidelines demonstrated positive results. Understanding the role of diet in ADHD management can help parents and healthcare providers make informed decisions regarding treatment options.
