The Archbishop of San Salvador, José Luis Escobar, did not provide names of the people chosen for canonization.

The Catholic Church of El Salvador began the process for the canonization of a “large group” of “martyrs” of the internal armed conflict (1980-1992), said on Sunday (08.06.2023) the Archbishop of San Salvador, José Luis Escobar Alas .

“Our Episcopal Conference has begun the process of canonization of a large group of our martyrs of the recent armed conflict that we have suffered in the country,” the archbishop announced during a religious ceremony in San Salvador.

Escobar Alas remembered the Spanish father Ignacio Ellacuría, murdered along with five other Jesuit religious -four Spaniards and one Salvadoran- and two peasant women in 1989 by the Salvadoran Army on the campus of the Central American University (UCA).

According to the Spanish agency Efe, the archbishop of San Salvador did not specify whether Ellacuría would be one of those canonized, although local Salvadoran media took it for granted.

The Salvadoran Catholic Church promoted the cause of beatification and canonization of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, assassinated in March 1980 by a death squad and cataloged as a martyr for America.

He also carried out the beatification process for Father Rutilio Grande, assassinated in 1977 by the Army death squads.

The Salvadoran war, which pitted the Army, financed by the United States, and the guerrillas of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), left a balance of 75,000 dead, some 8,000 missing and at least 12,000 disabled.
