Heat waves, increasingly prolonged in time and with higher temperatures, have triggered sales of air conditioners by 18% compared to July of last year, endangering their availability for this August and reaching record numbers. In 2022, the residential air conditioning market grew more than 24% compared to the previous year, and in 2023 it is expected that in some product ranges it will even double the growth of last year, explains the Association of Air Conditioning Equipment Manufacturers. Air conditioning (AFEC).

The energy crisis has led customers to look more and more at the most efficient technologies and the sector has continued to improve features and performance so that they consume less energy, these being the ones that will increase their sales the most this year, in addition of the traditional fans. The general secretary of the employers’ association of the electrical appliances sector (FECE), Alfredo Gosálvez, assured Efe that in August sales will go “down because there are already few appliances available.”

Likewise, he believes that it must be taken into account that during this month, due to the high temperatures, there will be fewer changes of residence, an activity that increases sales of this type of device. According to the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), the use of air conditioning accounts for only 1% of household energy expenditure. According to the AFEC calculations made with 2022 rates, these air conditioning units represent a daily cost of 0.81 euros, lower than that of other household appliances.

The French multinational specialized in DIY Leroy Merlin acknowledges having observed growth in air conditioning so far in 2023 due to heat waves like the ones that are being experienced this year, specifically 21% year-on-year. As regards fixed air conditioning, the company registered a growth of 56%, with this type of model experiencing the greatest increase, as happened, for example, with the “split”. In general ventilation, its sales increased by 21%, with the category of ceiling fans and pedestal ventilation being the ones that grew the most with 40.8% and 2% more, respectively.

From the company they observe that the fixed fans, compared to other years, are one of the models that are most chosen due to an increasingly persistent heat. In the same way, they see a change in the buyer’s perspective of wanting to make a long-term investment to face the high temperatures and cold of winter, which may be a cheaper option compared to gas consumption.

Home appliance sales outlet MediaMarkt has also seen an increase in demand for these types of appliances, which for weeks have been among its best-selling items, with portable air conditioner models within its “top 3” sales.
