Sudanese PM resigns – Janayugom Online

by time news

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk has resigned following a popular uprising. There have been massive protests in Sudan over the past few days demanding the transfer of power to the people. Two were killed and at least 200 were injured in what became known as the Army’s crackdown on dissent.

On October 25, the army overthrew Abdullah Hamdouk’s government and seized power. Hamduk was then placed under house arrest. Hamduk was re-elected Prime Minister in November last year on the understanding that elections would be held in July 2023. But protests intensified in the country against the sharing of power by the military. Protesters are raising the slogan that a complete democratic government is needed.

Every effort was made to prevent the country from slipping into a ruin. Addressing the nation before resigning, Hamduk said that Sudan was going through a “serious situation” that could adversely affect its survival. The military liberated Sudan in 2019 from the dictatorship of President Omar al-Bashir. The military seized power after three decades of dictatorship. When Bashir was ousted, people took to the streets demanding an end to military rule and the coming of a people’s government.

But the military declared a three-month state of emergency and froze the constitution, saying it would form an interim council with popular representation. The military then appointed Hamduk as prime minister. But it was ruled by the army itself. The people have intensified their protest against this.
